Term 4: Ground-breaking Greeks and So Much More!
As Term 4 draws to a close, our year 5 pupils have been busy exploring the wonders of Ancient Greece through a range of exciting activities, from character creation to a deep dive into Greek mythology. Here’s a look at all the amazing things the children have been up to in this final term!
Ground-breaking Greeks – A Journey through Time
The topic for Term 4 was Ground-breaking Greeks, and it has sparked the imaginations of the children in so many ways! To kick off their learning, they participated in an Immersion Day where they stepped into the world of Ancient Greece. The day was filled with hands-on activities, engaging storytelling, and fascinating facts that introduced the children to Greek culture. This exciting start to the topic set the tone for a term full of creativity and discovery.
In addition to exploring the mythical side of Ancient Greece, the children also took a historical approach to the topic. They studied different periods in Ancient Greek history, examining key events, important figures, and the progression of Greek society over time. This exploration helped them understand the significance of Ancient Greece in shaping the world as we know it today, from the birth of democracy to advancements in philosophy, art, and science.
Greek Food – An Adventure in Tastes
No exploration of Ancient Greece would be complete without a taste of Greek cuisine! The children had the opportunity to try Greek food, with some favourites like feta cheese, pita bread, and tzatziki. However, not everyone was eager to sample all the dishes – olives, in particular, proved to be a challenge for many! While some children bravely gave them a try, others decided they weren’t quite ready for the bold flavours of the Mediterranean. Still, it was a fun way to bring the topic to life, even if not all the food was a hit!
World Book Day – A Day of Inspiration
This term also saw the celebration of World Book Day, a day filled with excitement and inspiration! The children had the unique opportunity to meet a real-life author, Nina De La Mare, who shared her experience as a writer and inspired the children to explore their own creative writing. The children also took part in a workshop with Nina, where they had the chance to ask questions and learn more about the process of writing books. It was an unforgettable experience that sparked even more passion for reading and writing.
Art Day with Local Artist Shane Record
Another fantastic event was Art Day, where the children were introduced to Shane Record, a local artist with a gallery in Folkestone. Shane worked with the children on creating their own artwork while also painting a local landscape scene in the school hall. The children watched Shane work, learning about his creative process and engaging in a lively Q&A session. Afterward, they returned to their classrooms to complete their own masterpieces, inspired by the landscape they had just observed. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore creativity and connect with a local artist. Click here
Science Day – A World of Discovery
The children also enjoyed a Science Day, filled with hands-on experiments and activities that sparked their curiosity and deepened their understanding of the world around them. From fascinating experiments to exploring scientific concepts in action, the day was full of exciting discoveries that encouraged the children to think critically and explore new ideas.
Class Assembly – Sharing Our Learning
One of the highlights of the term was the Class Assembly. The children were excited to share all that they had learned with their parents and carers. It was a proud moment for both the children and their families as they celebrated the hard work and creativity that had gone into their learning over the past two terms.
Easter Hat Parade – A Springtime Tradition
To round off the term, the children took part in the annual Easter Hat Parade. Armed with their uniquely crafted hats, they paraded around with pride, showing off their creativity and festive spirit. It was the perfect way to end what has been an action-packed term.
Looking Ahead
As we look ahead to the next term, we can’t wait to see where the children’s curiosity and creativity will take them. Term 4 has been full of exploration, new challenges, and plenty of fun – and we’re excited to see what comes next in their journey of learning!
