Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education Intent

Our bespoke Physical Education (PE) curriculum has been carefully designed to meet the needs of our pupils while fully covering the National Curriculum. It provides a broad, balanced and progressive programme of physical activity that develops competence, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of being active.

Our curriculum has been created to reflect our school's context, facilities and the interests of our pupils. It ensures that every child, regardless of ability or starting point, has the opportunity to succeed, develop physically, socially and emotionally, and experience success through sport and physical activity.

Through our curriculum, we aim to:

  • Develop pupils' physical competence across a wide range of sports, activities and movement skills.

  • Promote positive attitudes towards physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

  • Build resilience, determination, teamwork and leadership through participation in competitive and cooperative activities.

  • Develop pupils' understanding of the importance of physical and mental wellbeing.

  • Ensure pupils acquire progressively more advanced knowledge, skills and tactical awareness as they move through the school.

  • Foster confidence, independence and respect through inclusive participation.

  • Inspire pupils to continue participating in physical activity beyond primary school.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils revisit and build upon previously taught skills, enabling them to improve performance and apply learning in increasingly complex situations.

Physical Education Implementation

Our bespoke curriculum is delivered through carefully planned units that provide progression in fundamental movement skills, games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, outdoor and adventurous activities, and swimming (where applicable).

Planning ensures that knowledge, skills and vocabulary develop progressively throughout the school.

Teachers identify:

  • Prior learning.

  • Key knowledge and vocabulary.

  • Physical skills to be developed.

  • Tactical understanding.

  • Assessment opportunities.

  • Appropriate adaptations to meet individual needs.

Teaching and Learning

Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to:

  • Practise and refine physical skills.

  • Apply skills in increasingly challenging situations.

  • Work individually, with partners and within teams.

  • Develop tactical understanding.

  • Reflect on and improve performance.

  • Lead and evaluate activities.

  • Experience both competitive and non-competitive physical activity.

Teachers model techniques, provide clear demonstrations and use questioning to deepen pupils' understanding of movement, tactics and healthy lifestyles.

Regular opportunities for repetition and refinement enable pupils to develop competence and confidence.

Curriculum Progression

Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils:

  • Master fundamental movement skills in the early years of school.

  • Apply these skills within games and sporting contexts.

  • Develop increasing tactical awareness.

  • Improve control, coordination, balance and agility.

  • Evaluate and refine their own performance.

  • Demonstrate increasing independence and leadership.

Knowledge and skills are revisited across year groups to strengthen retention and promote mastery.

Knowledge in PE

Alongside developing physical skills, pupils are explicitly taught knowledge about:

  • Rules and strategies within different sports.

  • Fair play and sportsmanship.

  • Health, fitness and wellbeing.

  • Warm-ups and cool-downs.

  • The effects of exercise on the body.

  • Safety during physical activity.

  • Teamwork and leadership.

  • Personal goal setting and self-improvement.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing and informs future teaching.

Teachers assess pupils through:

  • Observation of performance.

  • Skill progression.

  • Questioning.

  • Peer and self-assessment.

  • Teacher assessment against curriculum objectives.

  • Participation and application during lessons.

Assessment enables teachers to identify next steps and provide appropriate support or challenge.

Inclusion

Our curriculum is designed so every pupil can participate and achieve.

Teachers adapt lessons through the STEP framework which can include, but isn’t limited to:

  • Space: changing the size or shape of the playing area.

  • Task: adapting the objectives, rules or cues for than activity.

  • Equipment: modifying the resources used by pupils

  • People: adapting group sizes or assigning specific roles to pupils based on their key skills and those which are still developing.

  • Scaffolded instruction: this can be done verbally or with picture/written cues where necessary.

All pupils are encouraged to experience success and develop confidence through participation.

Enrichment

Physical Education is enhanced through a wide range of opportunities including:

  • Intra-school competitions.

  • Inter-school sporting events.

  • Active playtimes.

  • Extra-curricular clubs.

  • Participation in national sporting initiatives.

  • Opportunities linked to personal health and wellbeing.

These experiences broaden participation and encourage lifelong engagement in physical activity.

Physical Education Impact

The impact of our bespoke PE curriculum is demonstrated through pupils who:

Know More

Pupils understand:

  • The importance of regular physical activity.

  • How exercise benefits physical and mental health.

  • Rules, tactics and strategies across a range of activities.

  • How to evaluate and improve performance.

Do More

Pupils:

  • Move with increasing confidence, coordination and control.

  • Apply skills effectively within games and performances.

  • Demonstrate resilience and perseverance.

  • Work successfully as individuals and as members of a team.

  • Take responsibility for improving their own performance.

Become Physically Literate

Pupils leave primary school with the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and participate in physical activity throughout their lives.

Evidence of Impact

Leaders evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum through:

  • Lesson observations.

  • Learning walks.

  • Pupil voice.

  • Assessment records.

  • Participation data for extra-curricular activities

  • Monitoring of curriculum coverage.

  • Staff discussions.

  • Success in competitions and festivals where appropriate.

The evidence demonstrates that pupils leave our school physically literate, confident and motivated to lead active, healthy lives. They possess the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to participate successfully in a wide range of physical activities and are well prepared for secondary Physical Education and lifelong participation in sport and exercise.
