Year 6 Term 4 Blog

Year 6 Blog- Term 5

What another busy term it has been for Year 6! The children have continued to show fantastic maturity and resilience as we have moved through an important part of the year.

Our Discovery learning this term has centred around our topic A Child’s War, where the children have developed a deep understanding of life during World War Two. They explored why the war began, what life was like for evacuees and how our local area was affected. A real highlight of the term was our trip to Ramsgate Tunnels, where the children were able to experience first-hand what it would have been like to shelter during air raids. This brought their learning to life in a powerful and memorable way.

We also held our own WW2 street party, which was a wonderful celebration of everything the children had learned. The effort put into decorations and understanding the significance of the event was fantastic to see, it created a real sense of community.

In English, we have been reading Goodnight Mister Tom, which has supported the children in developing their understanding of character, setting and atmosphere. They have written thoughtful letters and engaging evacuation stories, showing increased confidence in using descriptive language, dialogue and tone to bring their writing to life . It has been brilliant to see how their writing continues to mature and develop.

In Maths, the children have tackled a range of more complex topics, including fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as statistics and problem solving. They have shown determination when faced with challenges and are becoming increasingly confident in applying their knowledge to a range of problems .

We were also lucky enough to take part in a dance workshop this term, which the children enjoyed. It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm, creativity and confidence shine through as they learned new routines and performed together.

In DT, the children explored the concept of “make do and mend,” learning sewing skills and understanding how people reused and repurposed materials during the war. This linked beautifully with our history learning and gave the children a real appreciation of life during that time .

In RE, the children have been exploring the big question, What do religions say to us when life gets hard? They have engaged in thoughtful discussions, comparing how different religions respond to challenges, grief and loss, and have shown great respect and maturity when sharing their ideas .

Term 5 has been full of rich learning experiences, creativity and reflection. We are incredibly proud of the children’s continued effort, positive attitudes and the way they support one another. As we move into term 5, we are excited for all the opportunities and celebrations still to come!
