Year 6 Term 3 Blog

Year 6 Blog Term 3

What an amazing term it has been for Year 6! The classroom has been full of excitement as we looked into our Frozen Kingdom topic and explored some of the coldest and most fascinating places on Earth.

One of the biggest highlights was our Immersion Day, where a real-life explorer visited us to run a hands-on workshop. The children loved hearing about life in extreme environments and asking thoughtful questions about exploration, survival and discovery. It really helped bring our learning to life and sparked lots of curiosity and discussion throughout the term.

In English, we enjoyed reading Kaspar, Prince of Cats by Michael Morpurgo. The children used this as inspiration to write beautiful setting descriptions based on the icy Antarctic tundra, using rich vocabulary and sensory details. Later in the term, they became journalists and wrote their own newspaper reports about Ernest Shackleton’s famous expedition, focusing on headlines, quotes and clear reporting.

Our geography and history topics took us deep into the polar regions. The children researched climate and wildlife.

In science, we explored how plants and animals are adapted to survive in extreme environments. The children recorded results using graphs, tables and diagrams, showing great progress in their scientific thinking and presentation skills.

Maths lessons focused on building confidence with fractions, decimals, percentages and algebra and the children worked hard to apply these skills to solve tricky word problems.

We also kept active in PE, taking part in gymnastics. Towards the end of the term the children created and performed their own gymnastics routine.

We are so proud of the positive attitude, effort and enthusiasm Year 6 have shown this term. It has been a real pleasure to watch them grow in confidence and independence as learners. We are already looking forward to the exciting experiences and challenges that the next term will bring!
