Year 5 Term 1 Blog
Year 5 Term One Blog – Allotment Adventures! 🌱
What an exciting start to Year 5 it’s been for Kew and Olympic classes! This term, our topic was “Allotment”, and we’ve enjoyed a brilliant mix of hands-on activities, outdoor learning, and new skills.
🍎 A Trip to Brogdale Farm
One of the highlights of the term was our visit to Brogdale Farm. We explored the orchards and learnt all about how different fruits are grown and harvested. It was fascinating to see fruit farming in action — and tasting some of the fresh produce was definitely a bonus!
🌍 Comparing Farming: UK vs Peru
Back at school, we explored how farming in the UK compares to farming in Peru. We looked at the different crops, climates, and techniques used in both countries, and learnt how geography plays a big role in the way food is grown. It was a great opportunity to see just how varied farming can be around the world.
🗺️ Geography: Becoming Map Experts
In geography lessons, both Kew and Olympic classes worked hard on improving their map skills. We learnt how to use 4-figure and 6-figure grid references, helping us to read and understand maps with much more confidence. These skills will definitely come in handy in future topics!
🍲 DT & Healthy Eating Day
A real treat this term was our Design and Technology / Healthy Eating Day. We learned about the importance of a balanced diet, then had the chance to make our own homemade soup and fruit crumble using fresh, seasonal ingredients. It was a fantastic way to combine our topic with cooking skills — and our classroom smelled amazing all day!
It’s been a fantastic first term for Year 5’s Kew and Olympic classes. We’ve learned so much through our Allotment topic, and we’re proud of everything we’ve achieved. We can’t wait to see what Term Two has in store!
