Year 5 Term 5 Blog: Science, Structures, and Team Spirit!
Term 5 has been a fantastic term for Year 5, packed with hands-on learning, exciting experiences, and lots of teamwork! Our topic this term was Properties and Changes of Materials, and the children have impressed us all with their scientific thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
Science: Investigating Materials
In science, we explored the properties and changes of materials, diving deep into topics such as:
-
Reversible and irreversible changes
-
Solubility and solutions
-
Thermal and electrical conductivity
-
Filtering, sieving, and evaporating
Through a range of practical investigations, the children predicted, tested, and recorded their findings. One highlight was creating their own mixtures and experimenting with ways to separate them—using filters, sieves, and even evaporation trays.
They especially enjoyed exploring chemical reactions—watching with amazement.
Design Technology: Moving Mechanisms
In DT, Year 5 explored mechanical systems and had the chance to design and build their own moving mechanisms. They learned how to use levers, linkages, and cams to create movement in their models.
Betteshanger Team-Building Trip
A true highlight of the term was our team-building trip to Betteshanger Park. This action-packed day gave the children a chance to step outside the classroom and challenge themselves in new ways.
Activities included:
-
Gel blasters – an adrenaline-filled team challenge that had everyone working together and strategising
-
Orienteering – using maps and clues to navigate through the park, testing our direction skills and teamwork
The children showed brilliant communication, resilience, and support for one another throughout the day. It was a fantastic opportunity to build friendships, confidence, and cooperation—all in the great outdoors.
Sports Day Success
We also had an amazing Sports Day, where Year 5 shone with energy, effort, and team spirit. From track events to fun challenges, every child gave it their best and celebrated one another's efforts. The cheering, encouragement, and determination on display made us incredibly proud.
Whether sprinting down the track or the obstacle course, the children demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and had a brilliant time.
What a Term!
Term 5 has been filled with energy, learning, and unforgettable experiences. From testing materials in science to testing our aim with gel blasters, Year 5 have challenged themselves and supported one another every step of the way.
We can't wait to see what Term 6 brings!
